My story with my Nashville coffee journey began in a rather unexpected way. Last year, my mom decided to embrace change and move to the city in search of a fresh start. With very little knowledge about Nashville and its local culture, she embarked on this journey with nothing but hope and determination. I, on the other hand, have been here for just two years, and every day feels like a new opportunity to uncover another secret that makes this city so uniquely welcoming. Although the unfamiliarity can sometimes be scary, it has also been the spark that ignited our passion for exploring everything Nashville has to offer, especially its coffee shops.
In a city as dynamic and diverse as Nashville, finding a sense of home isn’t always straightforward. For my mom and me, coffee became our shared passion and, more importantly, a way to weave ourselves into our new community and become familiar with it. We began seeking out local coffee shops not just as places to grab a drink, but as little memories in which we could relax, reconnect, and really get to know the heart of Nashville.
Our first few visits were filled with the kind of excitement that only comes with discovering something new. I remember walking into a small flower cafe tucked away in a little town center. The moment I stepped inside I was instantly drawn into an atmosphere that felt inviting. It wasn’t long before I realized that every coffee shop had its own personality and a unique story waiting to be told. Each visit not only introduced me to a new drink but also to a new perspective on life in Nashville. It became clear that these spots were more than just pit stops on our daily route.
As our weekly coffee adventures evolved into a cherished tradition, so did my desire to share these experiences with others. Aside from just being a class project I got the opportunity to participate in, that’s how Mugs with Mads was born. I wanted to create a space where both locals and visitors could find honest, heartfelt reviews of the best local coffee spots not just based on the quality of their drinks, but on the atmosphere, the story behind the business, and the little details that make each place special.
With every new coffee shop I explore, I’m reminded that there’s always something new to learn about the place we call home, and sometimes, that place is hidden behind a door with a welcoming sign and a long menu hanging above a register. While my journey started here in Nashville, it’s quickly grown into something much bigger. As someone who is always traveling, one of my favorite things to do as soon as I get to a new city is find a local shop to try. Each week brings a new adventure, whether I’m trying a staple in a well-known neighborhood or going somewhere new in an area I have never been.
